Home of:
Denise and Larry Pichon
1111 Sheridan Street
Garden: Bob's Market
Larry and Denise Pichon joined the Lincoln Park neighborhood
in April 1995, a little over eight years ago. They were
attracted to this home at 1111 North Sheridan in part due to
the quiet brick-lined street with its old stone curbs, and
they liked the bick alley running along the house. The
area's large old homes with history and character conveyed a
sense of the past that appealed to the Pichons.
The Pichons note that according to Vermilion County Museum
records, this home was started about 1898 or 1899, and most
likely took around three years to complete. Built by
hand with a quality of wood unavailable today, this home is
2 1/2 stories with a basement. The window in
front of the house is still the original leaded glass, and
the bay window on the staircase, with its open design and
original handrail lend a turn of the century touch that the
Pichons appreciate.
The landscaping challenges include some that are familiar to
many gardeners: hard clay soil, untrimmed pines, a vigorous
mulberry tree, rocks, bricks, clover and crabgrass. Larry
says that all these things are manageable with hard work and
the right tools, including a good hand claw, a small tiller,
mushroom mulch, a few chemicals here and there, quality
seed, and a trusty chain saw now and then. The Pichons
favor hardy perennials that are ever blooming and fragrant
with great color: roses, honeysuckle, mint and exotic lilies
top their list. And, of course, that Midwestern
"must" the tomato is always one of their favorites.
