Home of:
Mr. and Mrs. Lester Shafland
1113 Sheridan Streed
Design: Danville Floral
J. Reid Spang built the house in 1913; the family lived
in the home for seven years, before moving on to Pennsylvania.
Other previous owners include Louis Knake, Dan Lewis, Daisy
Rose, the Dr.(s) Parker, and the Wood family. The Shafland family
moved into the Lincoln Park neighborhood in 1962 when Lester was
transferred to Danville's V.A. Hospital as Coordinator of medical
rehabilitation.
The Shafland's appreciate several key amenities that their
home has to offer, including a fully finished basment, done
in cypress, and boasting a kitchen, bedroom, laundry room
and built-in barbecue. They also like the floor plan on
their main floor, with its two bedrooms, two fireplaces,
a full bath and a china closet. Other significant
architectural details in the home include double brick
construction, making the house well-insulated; a large front
porch; a library with built-in bookshelves; and, a small room
off of the upstaris bedroom which is a fun playroom for
children.
When the Shafland's first bought their home, landscaping
challenges were abundant, with overgrown trees and shrubs,
and a lawn that was more crabgrass and dandelions than
grass. Hard work paid off in one of the area's loveliest
yards, and the Shafland's count daffodils, violets and roses
among their favorite plantings, since each comes up [again]
annually and requires minimum care. They love lilacs
for their spring fragrance and irises for their graceful,
tall stems. Each of these favorites exhibits exquisite color,
as well.
The Shafland's remain very pleased that they chose to buy
a home in the 1100 block of Sheridan 41 years ago.
