The Brandts moved into the Lincoln Park neighborhood in 1998, after 2 1/2 years of searching for the right home.   This home at 117 North Sheridan met many of their desired requirements; the school district is that of Danville High School; it has adequate land to establish a garden; and, enough land to permit the home to be expanded or remodeled as needed.  This home lends itself to a casual, romantic cottage feel, a departure from their previous Federal style home.

Landscaping challenges include large old trees near the yard, with those gnarled roots actually extending into the yard in places.  As with many gardens, there are also areas that get too much sun and others that are too shady.   The Brandts resolve those issues by trial and error and moving and hauling plantings, when necessary.  One of Nancy's favorite plants is the iris, a historic garden resident.  Other favorites include various ground covers, weeping tree varieties, foxglove, hydrangea, and diverse examples of the hosta.  Nancy tries to create depth, pattern and beauty in the garden design, and prefers abundance, controlled chaos, structure that is not too structured, with views that pull the eye from one interesting point to another.
